Lloyd Kaufman - The New Mel Brooks?
Dear God, what hath Mel Brooks wrought? The state of American musical theater in New York has entered the coughing up blood stage and should cause Stephen Sondheim to go into hiding for good. The upcoming New York theater season features a slew of musical stage versions of movie marzipan that the world is trying to forget about - Shrek: The Musical; Irving Berlin’s White Christmas; 9 to 5: The Musical; The Addams Family: The Musical; Bruce Lee: Journey To the West; Catch Me If You Can: The Musical; Dirty Dancing; Father of the Bride: The Musical; Leap of Faith: The Musical (just think, not one but two retooled Steve Martin vehicles); Robin and the 7 Hoods; and, yes, even The Nutty Professor: The Musical. And now we can add to this Playbill from Hell the ultimate depravity, The Toxic Avenger: The Musical which opens its pre-Broadway run this fall in New Brunswick, New Jersey. I can’t imagine what would be next but I’m sure Eli Roth must be working up a song-and-dance version of Cabin Fever.

So if you take any title and just add “The Musical” after it, Broaday will clear space for you? Hmmm……

I think so. That’s why I’m writing “Paul Brenner Mortgage Payoff: The Musical.” At least it’s worth a try.
