Stage to Screen

British theater director Phyllida Lloyd helmed Mamma Mia! in London’s West End. Now she directs the film adaptation. On paper, that makes some sense. But this first-time filmmaker’s direction is static, stodgy and uninspired. Could a proven filmmaker have elevated this admittedly effervescent material? Discuss.

Sean:
The point of my upcoming review exactly. Lloyd is laughably bad behind the camera, so much so that a group of us critics were laughing about it at the DK screening Monday. Someone with a little more style could have made this material sing.
