Out of this world?

WALL-EAndrew Stanton’s Wall-E, the newest Pixar Animation Studios release, grabbed an even $63 million (domestically) in its opening weekend. Despite stellar reviews (96% Fresh on the Tomatometer) and a truncated run time (97 minutes), that was only good enough for Pixar’s fourth-highest opening gross.

How do the Pixar films rank in terms of opening weekend gross?

1. TOY STORY 2 - $80.4 million
2. THE INCREDIBLES - $70.4
3. NEMO - $70.2
4. WALL-E - $63
5. MONSTERS - $62.5
6. CARS - $60.1
7. RATATOUILLE - $47
8. A BUG’S LIFE - $46.1
9. TOY STORY - $29.1

Keep in mind, no one knew what Pixar was when Toy Story opened in 1995. And the first Story went on to gross $191.7 million.

Where do the Pixar films rank in terms of overall gross?

1. NEMO - $339.7 million
2. THE INCREDIBLES - $261.4
3. MONSTERS INC. - $255.8
4. TOY STORY 2 - $245.8
5. CARS - $244
6. RATATOUILLE - $206.4
7. TOY STORY - $191.7
8. A BUG’s LIFE - $162.7

The list shifts a bit - most notably, the rise of Stanton’s debut picture, Nemo. That could be good news for WALL-E as it tries to overshoot the studio’s current box-office average of $238.4 million. The lack of an animated competitor, at least until Fox’s Space Chimps arrives on July 18, can only help.
