One Family Movie. One Action Movie. One Huge Weekend.

Building on my colleague Sean O’Connell’s love of WALL-E, that little gem contributed to a weekend box office result I can’t recall seeing before: Two movies grossing over $50 million domestically.

Both WALL-E (see Sean’s five-star review) and Wanted (see review) jammed last weekend — just a regular summer weekend, no holidays — resulting in two big hits.

How’d this happen? Yeah, gas is expensive, but you’re not taking your vacation at the movies. These two movies hit because they’re marketed perfectly to their respective audiences, who practically complemented one another this last weekend.

So any guesses to Hancock’s success (or lack thereof)?

For weeks when I saw that poster I thought it was an ad for a new Herbie Hancock album.
